on the second week of September we started to defoliate cotton. There wasn't much cotton planted around our area this year, we only planted two fields and probably wont plant any next year. When we started picking this field last week the yields weren't looking good at all but it made a really good turn around When the field was about half way done we stated to cut stalks with the 7130 Started Disking cotton fields under today while soybean were being finished cut We like about 2 weeks being done cutting soybeans this on one of the last of the smaller fields So far the yields on soybeans have been pretty good and the cotton yields were average. rice actually did alot better than what we were expecting it to do. While we were cutting soybeans behinds the levees we saw a few deer and some ducks flying on our rice fields which is always a good sign to see in October whit hunting season right around the corner!

The fields are a nice touch. Not used to hearing about cotton, but why is everyone decreasing their acreage? Bad growing conditions, poor prices? Just wondering, no cotton grown in MN.

Just wondering, no cotton grown in MN. prices are pretty terrible right now from the farmers i've talked to theyre doing average or just plain terrible. had one guy get 3 bale and acre on a 60 acre feild had another farmer get 2 modules off a 30 acre feild. one farmer even started to plant penuts and said he makes more on 300 acres of penuts than off 700 acres of cotton.

Cotton sure is sucking right now, going to see a huge decrease in acreage next year for sure. theres been about 5 or 6 farms here(North East Arkansas closer the the mississippi river) stop planting cotton overall and theres gonna be double that next year as far as i know no one planted over 500 acres but 1 farmer who planted 2500 cause his father in law owns a gin here and the family farms who rely on cotton that work themselves.

We face the same problem here, if your land owner is connected to a gin in any they force you to grow cotton... Soybeans and peanuts are by far the most profitable crops here and corn is so much easier to grown then cotton. I know quite a few pickers that won't even get started this fall.

Cotton prices has always been the issue. I know some years they only broke even. By the time you spent in planting to harvest. Same in my area, they reduce or gain in acres over the years. Since the prices go up and down. Its not like corn, grain, or soy beans at least in those you can make something. Unless its a bad growing year. Some farmers in my area still grows it in hopes the market will make them cash in. Since it could jump by harvest. Which had happen a few times. If not they break even and harvest anyways. To at least get some of their $ back. Cotton is one of worse crops you can work with. Not much money to be made, and the equipment costs you big time. A picker costs more than a combine.
