As I said in my last journal the snow arrived on Dec 6th. We ended up with about 4 inches from that round. The one we were worried about was what they were forecasting for Tuesday the 8th. 12 inches with high winds and frigid temps. We made sure and tended to all the cattle and made sure all the snow clearing tractors were ready to go. We woke up Tuesday to heavy snow. It snowed all day but didn't really get bad till about dark when the wind arrived. We just waited it out till Wednesday morning then we had to start digging out. There were some fairly deep drifts around. Some of the country roads had drifts 6 or more feet deep. We had to open some of them up to get to cattle. Here is a pic of the 535 pushing snow around the yard first thing in the morning.
The 8630 at work.
The Bobcat cleaning around the shop.
Once we had some roads open we started running around taking hay to some of the cattle.
After a day of fighting snow we put everything that had been out in the shop so it could warm up and melt off. The black Pete was in getting a new block heater installed. The frigid temps we were having is a bad time to have a block heater go bad.
That week was pretty much all spent fighting snow and tending to the cattle. Once the roads were cleared the trucks were back to running as usual. One of the new Volvos was fueling while another one was leaving with a load of corn.
We have been back to the normal routine this last week. The hoppers are all on the road hauling milo and corn to the ethanol plant. We have been moving some of our cattle in to stalks closer to home. Calving season is just around the corner. We had to haul the cattle due to the icy roads. We try to drive them as much as possible but it is dangerous to the cattle and the guys on horseback to do it on ice. Here is the crew getting ready to go move some cows.
The last week has been pretty nice. It has warmed up and some of the snow has melted. It is getting muddy now. It is a nice change after the long cold snap. It was one of the longest ones with that extreme of temps that we have had in this area in several years. They are starting to forecast another possible round of freezing rain and snow starting on Tuesday again this week. Hopefully we can miss this one so we don't have to fight the weather during Christmas. That is all for now. Questions and comments welcome.
Minkler Farms wishes every one out there in farmtoyland a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
