With the weather we have been having the agronomy department has been pretty slow. They have been working in the shop and helping in the elevator and hauling grain. One of the guys was on the Internet looking at some auction sites and stumbled onto an auction out in Denver at a freight terminal. It had dozens of single axle vans and converter dollies. There was also a handful of IH day cab trucks on it. All of the trucks had some kind of mechanical issue. We talked it over and sent a couple of guys out to the auction. We were wanting some dollies for the harvest crew and the Ag dept. was wanting a van trailer or 2 to haul seed and make into a tender.
Here they are at the auction.
They called after the auction and said they bought 3 vans, 2 dollies and 2 IH trucks. They all have Dayton wheels which made them go cheaper so they bought them. The trucks both run good but have some mechanical issues. The yellow truck has clutch problems. It won't release, they are guessing it has a broken finger or pressure plate. The rear drive axle on the black truck has a bad ring and pinion or something of that nature. It won't move unless the power divider is locked in. Both of the trucks were used as local trucks and yard trucks. They only have around 300,000 miles on them but they have high hours on the engines. They will be used to tender and haul grain out of the field so they won't see a lot of miles. Other than that they don't seem to be terrible trucks. On Friday 3 guys and trucks headed to Denver to pick everything up. They were planning on hauling the 2 trucks on the low boy and pulling the trailers home with the Volvo's. 2 guy from Minkler Harvesting drove their Volvo's out because they have the doubles and triples endorsement on their cdls. Leaving the yard bright and early.
Once they got out to Denver they started to load up trucks. They neglected to measure the trucks and make sure they would both fit on the low boy. They got there and got started and realized they didn't look like they were going to fit. With a little creative engineering they looked like they might fit. They chained the back axle on the black truck up to the frame so it wouldn't dangle down and they let it hang over the back of the trailer. Luckily there is a plug in on the back of it and a set of lights with a cord that they made to haul something else that was over length once. So they hung them on the back of the truck with some red flags.
Now they had to get the yellow truck loaded and it has no clutch. Once it had built air they started it in gear and lined it up with the trailer. Then shut it off and started it in reverse. They backed it up till it spun out and shut it off. They were able to push it the rest of the way on with the rear frame of the Volvo. Hopefully they don't meet any grumpy DOT cops on the way home. They may not approve of this load. They chained it down really good with extra chains so it should be good to go.
Then they hooked up to the van trailers. Too bad triples aren't legal in Kansas or they could have gotten away with taking one Volvo.
Ready to head toward Kansas.
Here they are pulling in the yard just before dark on Friday evening.
Saturday morning came and it was time to unload the trucks. Coming off was a lot easier than going on. ;D
They put them in the shop to start getting them operational. They are going to change all of the fluids and filters and fix the problems they know about and any that they may find.
They decided to tear into the black IH first. Since they thought all it needed to be drivable was a new differential. What a surprise they got when they started to dismantle it. All that was wrong was a broken axle. They drained the gear oil and it was clean. Who ever diagnosed that problem was way off. That will be a way cheaper and easier fix. That truck should be running early next week easily. They haven't dove into the yellow truck yet. They are going to attack it Monday. Well that is all for now. Questions and comments welcome.
