hi everyone looking at all the customs and displays on here inspired me to build a display wont be much just a 4x6 display. i learned to build something basic and what i know this is my idea. an old dairy farm that the farmer retired and is raising between 30 - 50 steers. what i liked to know is
how many so called acres would i need for that many head i was thinking between 200 to 450...........this would include other crops besesides corn and hay silage for the animals.
with a smaller farm and small heard you think itd be better to be better for the family members to have jobs off the farm since it's not going to to be a huge profit farm?
How many tractors would be reasonible for the 200 - 450 acre range? I was thinking a small 4x4 like a 3294 for heavy tillage and then a smalled 2x4 tractor and maybe one with a loader for yard work?
What would be a good planter like a 4 or 6 row. Or a smaller farm be better off just gettign custom work hired in?
thanks alot.

If you want to go red id have a 1086 and a 1066 with loader. Acres sound bout right. A farm that size wont support its self hardly, let alone a family. Thats why i dont care for a display of them as they are pretty much a hobby farm. but its up to you. honestly you shouldnt need any row crops. You dont have enough cattle to afford over a 1 row chopper. If you must id go with a 4 row. for what your wanting id do a 1086 and 1066. possibly both have loaders. a MoCo, rake (wheel rake not a bar) round baler (an older vermeer) a bale trailer, bush hog and a manure spreader. you dont need FWA if you have a large enough 2wd tractor. and for 200-450 acres of tillable ground you wouldnt need anything over 20 foot, heck you could no till it all.

If you had around 450 acres then a 3294 would fit good, those tractors are fairly cheap considering their age and would fit in good.
Custom work would be better but a older 6 row planter would be good. You can buy a 15 year old CIH planter in good condition for 3 grand. There just isnt a demand for anything that old anymore, still works good just not as accurate.

well he did say it was a retired farmer so the equipment may have been from when he was a dairy and if hes just rasing steers then ya would have everything that was used on the old dairy farm

thanks for the help and ideas. our neighbor down the road hs about 500 acres and just has a 3294 fwd and 2390 then barrows a tractor or two from a neighbor when they need it on the blower or hauling extra wagons. I think a 3294 or 4955 would fit in great being older and cheap........or the farmer just keeping the nice bigger tractor after having an auction after selling the cows. A 970 agriking, 4020, 1066 would be little tractors too. You can still find some decent old equipment for a good price, or find bigger stuff at an auction for cheap too. Think maybe i'll have a neighbor come in for some chopping or haying, and have them use tractors from neighbors. Thanks for all the help.

My closest neighbor has 300 acres of hay to feed his cows, but that's his only crop. He uses a JD 4440(130hp) for tillage and cutting hay, a JD 4240(110hp) for baling hay and winter loader work, an Oliver 1555(45hp) with a DuAl loader for summer loader work, and a Ford 8N for raking hay.

I feel the need to chime in here. We farm around 400 acres and have 50 dairy cows+replacements. We grow hay, corn, and oats. Our equipment lineup might be more than we need, but here it is: Tractors 2- 1070 Agri Kings 125hp 2- 272 Leylands (one with a loader) 65hp 1- Farmall M 40hp 1- Farmall 350 35hp 1- Farmall Super H 22hp 2- Farmall Hs 18hp Equipment 4 bottom Case plow (we have stones and heavy ground) 16 foot Knowles drag (produces a smother finish than our 20ft) 14 foot JD disk 4 row IH corn planter 9 foot IH grain drill 9 foot Gehl haybine 2-MF square balers (one hook and one throw)+8 wagons New Holland hay rake New Holland 7 foot green chopper + 3 bunk feeder wagons Gehl 2 row chopper+ 3 wagons New Idea 2 row corn picker + 5 gravity wagons Avco elevator H&S single axle manure spreader (and looking to buy another small one for our heifer farm- if anyone in WI would know of such a thing pm me thanks!) Hope that helps give you an idea for your display. We hire our neighbor to do our combining.

I like Trey's lineup. I think a 7720 or 6620 would be a good combine for a small farm. They are a getting to be fairly cheap now a days. If it was mine I would have a couple soundguards and a 4020 or 2. I am not a person that thinks you can have too many tractors. Sometimes when you run older stuff it is handy to have a spare.

I forgot a few pieces... Mainly our Gehl skidsteer. It sure is handy to have around. Also, a device we call a quack-digger. It is like a small chisel plow and a drag got together and this is what they produced. Also we have an International 424 that we got from the county dirt cheap. It has a sickle mower and almost zero clearance. Therefore it sees almost no use.

I guess I'll add my two cents. Around here 200 - 500 acre farms are quite popular. Machinery ranges this is what I see for an example:
Farm # 1 Which is just a small hobby crop farm. John Deere 4440 John Deere 4010 with a loader Super c with a belly mower.........also used for pto use. John Deere 7200 6 row corn planter 6 row cultivator Bushhog disk Case foldible field cultivator. 2 lager gravity boxes The harvesting seed drilling is all custom done and a chisel plow and stalk chopper are borrowed from a neighbor.
Farm # 2 which is a retired dairy farmer who raises about 30 Jersey steers.
1175 Agri king 970 open station 1030(more so just a project tractor) 1290? Case open station with a loader 6 bottom plow new holland single axel manure spreader new holland mixer mill new holland small square baler a few random hay wagons 3 pt sprayer new holland pull type haybine single axel new holland chopper smaller h&s silage wagons an older tr new holland combine a new idea uni for corn picking a grain truck used to haul farm grain, neighbors grain and do work at the canning company.
I also believe you can never have too many tractors. Yes one or two are all you would probably need but it takes time to un hook and re hook implements, then if a tractor goes down you're really short handed. It's nice just to have a tractor for a mixer mill, one for the tmr..........
Also older equipment is easy to come by. Most of it is still in pretty diecent shape. Most implement dealers dont have much use for a 4 or 6 row planter, and with bigger farms buying out the small family owned farm equipment auctions are a good place to get something cheap. A neighbor down the road had about 30 head of cattle, and ended up buying a tandem axel knight side slinger pretty cheap at an auction........it was kind of over kill buy got a good deal and more loads in that spreader so it worked. Looking at different planters 2 years ago we were upgrading from a 7200 dry fertilizer 6 row and wanted a liquid 8, well we found some cheap 12 rows that were in our price range, but just didn't have the storage space for something that big.

we had a 9500 for 6 years and we took off 2400 acres WHat heads were you running on that sucker? Boy I wish I had pictures of our 9500 in 2004, the last harvest it ran with us. She had over sized duals big rear tires and a 25 foot flex head and 8 row corn head in front. She was a beauty and thats the combine (and year) i learned to operate one in. But now we are pricing a 9670 to replace the 9650 hahaha
