In 1963, the IH 203 combine started production. It was built to meet the needs of the small farmer. Who wanted a good combine for their small farms. And to give them another option of the IH 93 combine that was being built as well. However the 203 was a bigger combine to the 93. Which offered more capacity for the small farmer. And to give them a wider range since the next 2 combines the 403/503 was built for the larger farmers. The 203 remained in production until 1966. A total of 5,135 units was built out of East Moline Plant. The IH 205 was the combine that replaced the 203.
Features:
The combine had all kinds of nice features for the small farmer. An open station operator platform. The engine sat on top of the combine to power it. And easy to maintain with most of the areas easily accessible from ground level.
Saddle Tanks:
The 203 was unique with it's saddle tanks. Twin tanks are built on each side of the main body. A loading tube connected the two. So you can fill either one separate, or both at the same time. Which helped when cutting on hills. As you could shift the load of the tank being filled to higher ground. With the tanks placed low. The combine has exceptional stability and traction. Also the left tank can swing out. To access maintenance points. The right tank could not swing out. And there was no maintenance points on that side.

I thought I would share this little combine. Why this combine is kinda special to me. One used to sat behind the woods at my pawpaws. That a neighbor owned. I remember going out to it and looking it over. Dreaming about using it. And how it looked in its full glory. Since then it was finally cut up and sold for scrap. Still in my heart the IH 203 has a place.
