I would recommend using Bass wood since it's a little stronger. If you only have balsa available, then you can use that.
1. I use a lot of 1/8". It's probably the most common size I use. You can use a scale calculator (google it) to get exact dimensions if you want.
2. This varies. I use wood glue whenever possible but it doesn't setup very fast. If I need something to stick within a few seconds, I use a good superglue GEL.
3. Razor knife and razor saw at the bare minimum. I have a mini chop saw from Harbor Freight that has been a huge asset in building. I also have "The Chopper" which is great for cutting quickly.
Hope that helps.

Spruce is even better if you can find it. Stronger and straighter than bass wood.
As far as what is the best size just scale down what you are wanting to replicate.

I use 3/32" square dowel basswood for posts and 1/8" round dowel (3/32" if I can find it) for round posts. I use 1/32" thick basswood sheets for boards. I line a stainless steel ruler along the wood and cut strips with a xacto knife. I use scissors to cut pieces where the knife is having a little trouble. I use superglue because I am too impatient for woodglue lol.
