Hi everyone,
my last journal left off where the couple and some family members of Fernwood Farms were demoing some Kubota equipment to clear out some fallen tree limbs and rocks from the old cow pasture, so they can refurbish it this spring and hopefully have a few head of beef cattle grazing on it this summer.
This Wisconsin winter has been pretty mild, but there has been nights of acuminating snow fall, and days of -30 windchills. Lately temperatures have been warm though which made the cow pasture very mucky, so the couple decided to turn their attention to the barn, and finish the pasture prep at a later nicer date. When the couple moved to the farm in 2009 it was in very poor shape from sitting empty for almost 15 years and neglect from the past owner due to old age and health issues. According to neighbors and the local coffee shop talk the couple were told that the past owner milked Holstein cows in the barn, and when he started having health issues in 1990 got rid of them, and "gutted" out the barn to house steers but never did that. The old barn was litered with bags of trash, old furnisher, feed and seed sacks, chemical jugs, and boxes of old news papers and magazines. The couple started taking the bags of trash and boxes to the burn barrel. On one of her trips to the burn barrel a guest of wind blew what looked like some small pieces of paper out of the wives box she was carrying when she stopped to pick up the paper she discovered they were old photographs. The wife quickly brought the box back to the husband in the barn. As they rummaged through the box together they found a handful of old, sun faded, and water damaged pictures of what must of been from the past owner.
The couple thought it was really neat seeing some pictures of the farm from its glory days. They're going to talk to some neighbors and see if they have any more information on the past owner or any of the remaining family members who might like the pictures.
After cleaning the barn the couple decided to take a trip to Tractor Supply Co. to get new gates and panels for inside the barn. They grabbed the flatbed and trailer from along the grain bin.
While the couple were gone the John Deere dealer called and said the Kubota they had was going out for another demo but they'd drop off a similar one if needed a loader tractor yet.
When pulling into the driveway the couple saw this.
Both Kubota's are very nice the open station will have enough power for small field work, and can fit into the barn, but the cabbed Kubota would sure be more comfortable during the hot summer and cold winters. The couple really needs to think on what they want to a do. Just starting out farming a brand new tractor isn't really in the budget, but the old 706 they bought at an auction to mowe around the farm and blow snow is starting to be in the shop a lot lately.
The couple unloaded the gates and panels off the trailer.
When at TSC the couple bought some parts for their King Kutter Bushhog that needed some repairing after having a mishap with a hidden metal t fence post in the old cow pasture last fall.
On a wet damp snowy weekend morning the husband brought it into the nice warm shop to fix it right away.
That's about it for now. I hope all of you enjoyed this journal and as usual any comments, questions or smart remarks are always welcome. Thanks for viewing.
