Well after a month at the farm in which we got 5.5\" of rain, one major, one minor hail storm and 2\" of snow I finally had to come back to my desk job. The hail storm on Aug 28 was devastating, the farm lost 6 quarters of mustard and lentils. One field has been hailed on 3-5 times this year! We got the south end of the storm, we were cutting 5 miles away and barely got a drop. The north end of the storm blew a train off the tracks 45miles away. ca.news.yahoo.com/cpr-freight-train-derails-eastern-saskatchewan-wind-may-144058911.html...oh yeah we got a little harvesting done also. Swathing lentils: and mustard Harvesting winter wheat I had some fun with my GoPro also, I made a magnetic mount for it with a 45lbs magnet and had a backup tether on another 45lbs magnet so it wasn\'t going anywhere. Videos from all of these are coming also but here are some still teasers. Harvesting Mustard Wheat: Lentils More mustard swathing I added a little bling to two of the combines: I just like this picture. This was the scene the day I was coming home, timed that one perfectly! Videos are coming!!!

Oh wow great shots. Got to love what you can do with a go pro. Snow already! Now that is something else.

You got all the shots I wanted to with my gopro haha. It seemed whenever I remembered to take mine to the field I wouldn't have time to mount it. Or my battery would die or run out of memory. Pretty sweet shots you got though.
We also got some snow the past few days, aren't anywhere close to done harvest. Crazy.
PS: Can you send me a picture of the mount you made. I want to make one but dunno how to. Thanks.

You might find this interesting, maybe not... I didn't realize my camera was running one night when my dad, who was trucking for me, and myself had one of the most typical conversations during a harvest. If you have been in a field during harvest you have had almost the exact conversation, if not here is a little insight into a combine cab. I will add I am surprised the entire conversation stayed G rated, usually after a long day, and talking about rain, there is a few F-bombs... The entire clip was over 10 min long so the ends are double speed. youtu.be/qIgJ1B3Nftw

I just carried it everywhere, I have a small bag that holds everything I need, including three batteries and a charger and have a 32gig card that I Would dump onto a laptop ever night so I was always ready to go. :-) I can't really show you the mount because I coated the whole thing with JB weld. I started with the magnet on the left, which is now my backup tether, added a small L bracket, some 1/4" bolts and a GoPro Tripod adapter. I got the magnets from Home Depot and everything else from the Co-op. If you can find one I have seen magnets with a bolt in the middle that would save all the extra stuff, just make sure you get strong magnets! This is the tether, I think I got it on Amazon. I never had to test it because I had a strong primary magnet but I felt better using it. I was always checking on my phone app so it if fell I could stop and grab the camera.

I put a cord on my suction cup mount with a clip on the end, saved my camera multiples times with that. I had it up on top the tank and everytime it would fall off. I must need to clean out my suction cup cause it was falling off everything by the end of the year, that really stopped me from getting videos this summer. Also put a bracket on the unloading auger but never got the ambition to climb out on the auger and couldn't talk anyone else into it. Need to stand on top the grain cart I guess. I was constantly watching my phone when I had the camera out making sure not to lose it.
Thanks for those pictures, I think I kinda know how to make one, I'll try and find one with a bolt in the middle like you said.

I only use my suction cup mount inside, the surface has to be perfect (flat and clean) for them to work I find. After I decided that magnet wasn't letting go easily I didn't worry about it to much. I also bought the clamp for a bike handle bar that holds onto hand rails nicely.

I was wondering which gopro camera do you use? I was looking at getting the GoPro Hero 2 but not too sure if I should get it.

I have a Hero3+ silver, I wouldn't get a 2 now since the 4 is coming out early next year they will not be supporting the 2 much longer and if you wait the price of a 3 should come down next year. (Should?)
A warning about buying a GoPro, whatever you spend on a camera be prepared to spend that much again, probably maybe more, on memory cards, batteries, accessories and mounts. Counting everything (camera, two wasabi batteries and charger, memory card, editing software, half a dozen mounts and two cases) I am probably over $900 invested.
When using it don't be afraid to lose it. You will never get dynamic shots from safe locations. Just make sure you have good mounts.
I will say once you have one and you get creative with it there is no end of uses for it. Just check out my YouTube channel.

I have been thinking about getting one, but I wont be spending $900. Before I get one I probably ought to talk to the guys I work for to see if they would be willing to take the time to set it up on equipment and stuff.

My big problem besides mounts this past summer, was being able to go out and mount it. Seems we where always running and never had time to go out and set it up. Whenever I tried I'd be rushing or get told to get back into my combine and get cutting.

I always put it out when I was stopped anyway waiting for a truck, unloading, fixing something or taking a leak. With the magnet I could have it mounted in 5-10 seconds and be rolling again.

That's the problem. We don't stop. We unload on the go with a cart and by the time I have that empty the combines full. It keeps it from being boring but it would be hard to mount cameras.
