About the farm: Fernwood Farms is based off of the small acreage farm I live on and the story line is based on what's really happening. Fernwood Farms is an 80 acre hobby farm located in Burnett WI. The farm sat empty for almost 15 years. A younger recently married couple bought the farm that consisted of a house, small outbuilding, grain bin and a barn. For sitting empty for all those years and being neglected by the past owners due to old age and health issues the buildings were in pretty poor shape. For 5 years the couple rented out the land for extra income besides their full time jobs, and saved up enough money to tear down the old farm house and build a newer style house. After that they slowly progressed on fixing or updating the other buildings on the farm. The couples goal was to slowly get into farming on the side but still have a steady income with their full time jobs. They wanted to raise cattle(some for meat), cash crop, and grow enough feed for their cattle. This is the year all that will fall into place. The couple right now(with the help of other family and neighbors) are clearing out and replanting the back 30 acre pasture behind the barn. The pasture was very overgrown, had a lot of dead logs, trees laying around and plenty of hidden rocks. With the extra time off from work due to the holidays and the abnormal warm WI winter the husband, and his dad decided to start clearing some dead logs off the pasture.
Picture #1: A John Deere 7200 corn planter that was bought this past fall at an auction had it's home in the pasture, but had to get moved in front of the barn so it wouldn't be in the way.
Picture #2: Taking a break fooling around on the dirt bike. The Kubota tractor was brought in to haul some cut fire wood back to the shop/garage that came from some better down logs.
Picture #3 & 4 & 5:The Kubota skid loader on tracks was very handy not to rut anything up too bad in the wet and low sports of the pasture.
Picture #6: On the back of the flatbed is the family dog Radar. Radar is a German Shepard who works very hard guarding the farm, and hopefully the soon to be cattle. Radar got his name because he was dumped off at the local police station at only 3 weeks old. The wife is a co-manager volunteer for the local animal shelter and was fostering him until he would be old enough to be adapted, but the family fell in love him and kept him, being from the police station, always being on the look out, and the wives grandparents always watching the show M*A*S*H they thought it was a very suitable name.
