The fall season is starting to arrive on the farm. The days are getting shorter, t - shirts have been replaced with longsleves, and everything that once was a bright dark green is changing to a harvest gold, basic chores are happening on along with a couple seasonal items.
With the cooler tempers the cattle are getting more grain to fatten up.
The cowyard got cleaned and spread over some old hay ground.
The couple of Fernwood Farms have a few apple trees they harvest apples from and sell at a local farmers market. The IH 4 row corn planter that got parked under the trees over summer got hitched up and found its winter home up in the haymow.
Getting the farm truck loaded with apples.
The John Deere 630 was at the local dealership getting repainted, and was brought home.
The couple of Fernwood Farms also grows about 3 acres of pumpkins each year. They also sell the pumpkins at a local farmers market, but also sell them off the road, have a small contract with some local businesses, and near Halloween have a huge family gathering that includes a hayride out to the patch, pumpkin carvings, and stories around a fire. Hauling pumkins is a great job for the 630.
One night before dinner a passer by caught a glimpse of the old truck sitting in the weeds by the barn, and was wondering the story behind, and if it was for sale. It was sitting out side of the barn when the couple bought the farm. The farm sat empty for about 7 years, and from what neighbors told them the truck was there since they could remember. The couple would like to try to fix the truck up someday, but you know projects on the farm.
Besides working full time jobs in town the couple still rent out some farmland to a larger neighbor for extra income. It's odd seeing red on the farm, but every farmer has their special brand, and loyal service at the local dealerships.
Thanks for viewing, and as usual any comments, concerns, or smart remarks are always welcomed.
