Very cool.
Never been around this kinda stuff other than driving past watching. Does it take a bit of horsepower to run those choppers? Does it need a 4640 sized tractor or would a 120-140hp be sufficient. I don't know, just a question.

Does it need a 4640 sized tractor or would a 120-140hp be sufficient. I don't know, just a question. That chopper is a 3 row 3970 i "bought" (but haven't paid for yet ;D haha) last fall. It is rated for 180 hp, and that is what we dynoed that 4640 at. I think the 4440 would have a hard time with it. the chopper also has the large 1000 pto, and that is what a 4640 has standard so it just makes more sense to use a 180 hp or so tractor, but im sure you could get by with 150hp but i don't know if i would go any lower than that. The link on the bottom of the post is a clip of the chopper in action.

But they aren't mine. The neighbor im buying the chopper from let me use his wagons if i bought the chopper. I am gunna look for some end dump wagons, i don't need the side dump.

thats pretty cool. don't see too many people that still use the old pull type choppers In my area only 2 guys have selfpropelleds, and they are dairys. Everyone else has pull-types. ha that chopper is one of the newer things on the farm, if i remember right it is a 99', but i guess that is 12 years old now......

You have a nice selection of soundguards. I'm a fan of the 4640.

I think about every farm used to have a pull type around here. Now most guys just hire a custom chopper to come in and do it. They can do a heck of a lot in a couple of days. There are still a couple guys that chop with a pull type but not too many.

I help a neighbor that still cuts about 3000 ton with an old 3970 with a 3r and pulls it with a 25 or 2490 case. cant remember for sure. Takes forever to get done. For trucks they cut down a few old chevy trucks into trailers and we pull them with fairly new magnums. His dad runs the chopper and they were going to put one of the magnums on the chopper and his dad threw a fit, "I aint goin to run one of those new fangled sobs on my cutter" lmao. Makes me glad that we hire ours done.
