In 1961, IH wanted to make a new combine. To replace their current line up. This new series would replace the 101, 151, and 181. This new series is the 303, 403, and 503. I will focus on the 403 and 503 combines.
Making of the 403/503:
They gave a list of improvements they wanted made to the combines. Flip up seat that is fully adjustable, Operator's platform raised, Tractor type steering, Controls moved for easier reach, Low grain tank so you can see level, Positive clutch engine separator drive, Rear access ladder placed on the left, Lower height for truck transport, Hood sides made deeper in the back, Stronger framing.
Production:
The main feature they wanted on the combines was easier service. They was in production for 9 years. Almost 200,000 units was produced for the 403 combine. Proving to be a very popular model. While the larger 503 only 6,900 units was made. They was replaced in 1969 by the 15 series of combines. The 403/503 also made history as well. In 1965 they was the first production combine with hydrostatic drive. Instead of using gears. Also the series was upgraded in 1965. With power steering, redesigned operator's deck, and new style of straw rack.
Big, Tough, and Rugged:
These combines was made to be Capacity Champions. They was built Big to eat up acres. Tough and Rugged to hold up to the harvest demands. With the 503 you can harvest up to an acre in 6 minutes. With a 4 row corn header, you can shell up to 6,000 bushels a day.
With a good range of options. Including a cab. You can meet any harvest demands.
Service is an ease on these combines.
The drivers platform has controls at easy to reach. And a quick glance you can see your bin level.
The combine can easily be trucked to another field. With a height of 10ft. Customer harvesters will love the hauling ease.

This is one combine I been wanting to see made for years now. I would really love to see Ertl bring out a 403 with a nice header and 4 row corn. It would be a nice one to have from IH to equal the John Deere 95 they came out with.
