Well calving is well under way and going pretty good. We have about 50% of the calves on the ground. The heifers were done about the second week of Feb. only lost 5 out of 220, and 3 of those the heifers layed down and had them next to a creek and they fell in. We've only lost 3 out of the cows with about 200 on the ground so far. I thought we were done spending money on equipment for the year but I was wrong. We've been wanting to update our 9610 for a couple of yrs now, she has about 4000hrs on her, just never could find a suitable replacement. Dad drove by the deere dealer the other day and saw they had a good low houred 9650 for a good price so we made the trade. Shes a real clean machine, came from a older fella that cut about 400 acs of wheat a yr.
(thank you Chris Hanssen, you did wonderful my friend.)
There was an interesting turn of events around the first of the year. A local crop care business shut there doors for some reason, theres alot of rumors but no one really knows the reasons. So our company Johnson Ag Enterprises(JAE) along with Claytons, Minkler Ag, our partner in this venture, has picked up alot of their customer. And with all the extra work we were really under equiped. So after some consulting with the banker we got the go ahead to expand. Clayton and I and one of his employees took a little trip up to an Iowa fertilizer companys auction back around the 19th. We came home with some very good used equipment.
We picked up a NH3 tanker, a matching set of 05 W-900s with cats, a fairly new sprayer trailer, a 25 ton dry tender trailer, and a 8103 with both the liquid set up and a dry spreader with about 3000 hrs. Things at the sale sold real cheap I thought, ended up spending alot less than we thought we would, got the whole group for around 200K. I figured the trucks alone would bring 60 a piece. The trucks are also going to get air tags added and will heavy haul in the winter.
didnt take us long to switch the 8103 to the spreader and get it to work.
we tried to put the tender trailer on the sprayer trailer to haul it home since there were only 3 trucks and drivers, it didnt work. But as luck would have it Minkler trucking does some equipment delivering and just happend to have a couple of sunflower drills that had to go up close to the same area. So a few days later his lowboy picked up the tender and came home. I didnt have much to do and was bored so I took one of the 900s down to his place to pick it up.
We're still thinkin about addin another row rig, but might have to wait and see how things shake out. Anyway things keep spinnin round, until next time, thanks for lookin and ?s and comments are always welcome. Dustin.
