Four Leaf Farms
The original ground was purchased in the early 1940s. We are located around the town of Franklin, Indiana. We raise on an average year 675 acres of corn, 465 acres of soybeans, 280 acres of wheat, and 56 acres of hay for a total of 1456 +/- acres. The farm rents 530 acres of ground (500 tillable). Some tillage is done in the fall, as well as stalk chopping, with more field prep occurring in the spring. We plant Beck’s seed. My dad co-owns the farm with his brother. Grandpa is retired but still helps out. I am a college student and help on the weekend and on breaks. Dad has a herd of 10 Polled Hereford cows, and sells some of the steers for 4-H projects/showing while selling the remaining steers at a sale barn. He also raises Holstein Dairy steers. He gets them from our friends dairy farm. The steers are raised in a feedlot across from the house. Some heifers are used as replacements, the rest are sold for 4-H projects/ showing. We grind our own feed and store it in hopper bins. Corn is picked and stored in the cribs down the road. We contract out the first cutting of hay to a friend with a bigger mower. Our hay is too thick for our haybine on the first cut.
