We are looking at a 9250 Steiger and I was wondering if any of you guys had anything to say about them? We have a 9170 that's short on horse for some reason so we are looking to bump our horse up a bit. Also, what are you guys pulling with them and how fast? Thanks Landon

If your 9170's short on power a 9250 isn't going to make it any better. 9170's a big frame 335hp tractor (if I remember right) vs the mid sized frame 9250 at 300(+/-)hp. Moving up to a 9370 would get you 360hp, 91/9280's are 375hp.
Our 9370 has pulled a 45' (9" spacing) air drill with 430bu tank for years now at 6mph without issue. We're stepping up to a 58' (12" spacing) drill this year with the same tank.

We watched a video of a 9250 pulling a 54 FC and he was moving. We have a 24 foot soil finisher and the 9170 would struggle up hills. I guess we could always just call a Cummins rep. and have them come out and turn it up. The other reason for getting rid of it is because the pins and bushings are going bad and this was apparently an older model which had a TOTALLY different hinge point. Most just had the bar with swivel bushings on them but ours has a big triangular shaped box so it was gonna be a pain to get replaced. Landon

I personally cringe at the thought of going to a smaller frame from the big one but that's just me, always less stress on a big frame tractor and it's components when working it hard. I understand the worn hinge/pins issue. They're not fun to replace from what I've heard. What kinda hours on that 9170? Sounds like it may be time for an injector job or some pump work too. I'd still search out a 9280 or 9370/80/90 replacement if it were me but that's just myself speaking.
I've got a neighbor with a 9250 that must be turned up. It's gotta be. A couple years ago he went for pulling a 35' CCIL cultivator set up with a 155bu Bourgault air seeder system to now pulling a 40' Concord air drill and he's got some big hills to clime.

I was just down there looking at planters a few weeks ago. I thought the jd dealer was the only dealer in town. And to be on topic, i would agree to stick with a large frame. My neighbor had a 9250 for 2 years and went to a large frame, i think he has a stx4 something something, i'm not sure he hasn't had it very long for me to get a good look at it.

It has about 5500 hours on it. I know what your saying about the large frame to a small frame. The 9250 has around 4000 on it and it has pulled a planter for the guy who used to have it, he also is a very nice guy and tells you exactly what he has done with/to it and has taken great care of it. Here's a video of the 9170 pulling the finisher, skip to 1:41 to see video of it pulling. The other thing is that our 8410 Deere pulls it faster than the 9170 can. Landon

I don't know much about older tractors, but couldn't you chip it? Has it always been like this? We've had tractors start acting up before and send them to a dealer, could be something small that needs fixing. Just my opinion. Our dealer has a used 350HD that I know the owners to... Dallas

I have no idea if it could be chipped or not it's just a plain jane 855 Cummins. I might have to check into that. We bought it 2 years ago when we got our new ripper. We figured it would have plenty of horse but it turned out it didn't. I don't know if it's something from factory or from one of the previous owners. I think a 350 HD might be just a little out of our price range. Landon

We've got a 9180 that's turned up to 425 and is a beast I would recommend the 9100 series highly but I don't think a 9250 could pull a 54' fc because our 9180 pulls a 54' nice and that's a 125 hp difference that 9250 couldn't of been going to far in the ground
