This is our earliest start date yet for seeding. We had initially planned to start with seeding peas, but Monday morning the the weather forecast stated 3 days of decent weather before 4 days of rain, so a last minute decision to get the canola in the ground to take advantage of the forth-coming moisture was made. Being that we were set up for peas already and the tandems were full of treated peas and phosphorus fertilizer the semi was put into service for fertilizer duty. The drill was switched over and filled, ready to go by noon.
Monday pm and Tuesday proved to be stressful days with learning the new drill and finding more assembly issues, monitoring issues, etc... but we got through the majority of issues and managed to finish up our 670+/- acres of canola early yesterday morning. Field peas are next on the agenda in which we were able to switch over and get some acres in yesterday pm between rain showers.
Pics for the week so far....
Driving down to the farm Monday morning from Moose Jaw, caught my first glimse of crop going in the ground. Actually the first all blue outfit I've ever seen in the area so that was kinda neat.
...and here we go... Canola seeding rate was set at 5 lbs/ac. We were also putting down (double-shooting/side banding) a Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Sulfer blend at a rate of 260lbs/ac. Previous years we would have banded the fertilizer in the fall to pick up time in spring, but fall was pretty busy and with a bigger drill and no spring baby's due this year (like last year) we're feeling a little less stressed about "beating the clock" this spring.
I can never resist a glamor shot (or 2) at sunrise...
As you can see we still got water... although it's dropped 16" from last year and I probably seeded .5 acre of what was under water last year so we're slowly gaining back our acres... :-P
