Back in 2009, I began construction of my first high detail display. The display is modeled after my family's dairy farm. This is the farm my father grew up on and today, my cousin continues to milk 150 cows on this farm. My cousin and I are the 6th generation to farm this ground.
Here are some pictures of how I built my 4'x8' display.
My bank barn is made out of plywood and all the other buildings were made out of Bass wood. Some of the bass wood used is slightly out of scale due to my children being young and completely infatuated with my display. I've had to fix or repair the buildings several times!! They were over built to hold up a little bit better.
I measured every building and took a little over 400 pictures. I also had the ability to check out different details during my regular visits to the farm.
On to the pictures...
Our corn barn
Our bank barn
The real barn
I made all the windows and doors on my computer and printed them out on decal paper purchased from ebay.
Our milk parlor
The Free stall barn
The composting pack barn
I used photo backer (the stuff you put in picture frames) to make my concrete sections.
Fencing was made out of bass wood.
This was the last overhead shot before I started landscaping.
I had lots of help in the form of gift certificates and bass wood Christmas presents while I was building this display. It took me a little over 10 months to build all the buildings. With heavy coupon clipping and a patient wife, I managed to only spend about $175 in materials out of my own pocket.
Questions are welcome. I will try to remember the answers as best as I can! (It has been 3 years!)
