Went out into the ripest of our peas right beside the yard a cut a test strip. Looking like we'll be going in the next day or so... which means probably this afternoon ;-). Canola swathing also underway as of last night. More pics to come... Looking out my front door round suppertime last night.

Actually I'm happy to say it'll be a big green machine. We made a deal on a 9530 Deere this past weekend. Not the best timing to be dealing on a tractor before the crops in the bin, but the price was too good to hold off on.
Got a couple guys waiting for the chance at our 9370 too....

The neighbors have been doing their winter wheat as have a few others around the area. Don't know of any other peas coming off yet other than ours.
Yield so far has been a disappointment for what we were expecting. Best field so far has had a hard time maintaining 40 bpa, some spots are down to just over 20bpa. Too many thin spots from excessive spring moisture once you get into the field.
For the winter wheat I'm numbers around the 65bpa figure. Guys are saying it never finished filling because of heat. I think it was from rust (disease) from wet spring. We didn't have any "real" heat until a couple weeks ago when the wheat was already turning. My best friend who's a organic farmer got a 50bpa crop of w/w and feeling pretty good about it for being organic and all.

How hard are those peas to combine? are you cutting them right off the ground or is there enough stubble you would be able to get by with a rigid head? A neighbor had a plot of them for experimental purposes this year and we have been thinking about them some, have heard they can boost wheat yield plus you won't have to summerfallow so they would be ideal if they could work out for us in this area.

They're not bad to combine at all. We have a set of wider slot concaves we swap into the combine for peas other than that, slow the rotor right down and crank the wind way up. They're pretty well threshed out in the feeder housing anyways. Up here peas and lentils are a typical rotation crop to wheat and durum for most guys. Being legumes they make their own nitrogen and leave some behind in the soil at the end of the season so it works out well. We don't always fertilize them but when we do it's just 40-50lbs of phosphorus to give the plant a jump start until they start producing their own.
We used a rigid header for years (up to 08) without too much issue. Back when we were using a 30' MacDon 972 (on 21/2388's) we'd set it on the ground and let the auto height take over. Worked really well. Now running 40' it's nice to have the flex draper. The newer pea varieties do stand up better than they used to. This year I'm actually leaving a little stubble behind. Got the skids set at their highest setting on the header.

I couldn't believe how much the peas stand up now! There is a lot of fields that they are standing knee high or better, nothing like the first time we grew them in the early 90's they were maybe a foot high! Lentils on the other hand... its like shaving a Sphynx cat sometimes.
Chris you might need to get a picture showing the difference between peas and lentils. ;-) I will be cutting a lot of lentils but no peas this year.

Sell them to India and the middle east mostly, they love them there. They apparently make good soup, I am not a fan though. Lentil cookies are pretty tasty though. I worked for a seed farm a few years ago that, at peak times, would ship a container every day or two to India for human consumption and that was a small operation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentil

what use do you have for lentils besides a cover or rotation crop like what do they use them for? Nolan Clayton's bang on, The largest importer of Canadian lentils is India....... when they can afford them. Which right now they can't, and as a result their buying more peas causing the lentil prices to drop over the last couple years and peas to rise. At least that's what I'm hearing. 2 years ago lentils (small red varieties anyways) were up .35-.40 cents/lb. Now they're sitting .16-.19/lb and what looks like another big crop coming off. I grew peas this year instead and I think they'll do ok. Their up around 8-$8.50/bu which is a good price for peas. Cutting lentils last year Here's a pic of the best crop of peas I've personally combined was this crop in 07... Though 3 years before this the farm took off a pea crop that AVERAGED 80bpa. I was still pulling wrenches at the time and didn't show up until durum harvest. I'll get a new update post up on pea harvest soon.... as time allows
