...and more lentils!
4,000 acre farm and someone decided to seed 2,000 acres of lentils. If you don't know anything about lentils they grow up to 8" high but can be as flat on the ground snakes have to look down at them...
I told him I am not cutting any lentils next year.
There was just something about this picture I like
They were rained out Friday night picking up mustard swaths so I finished them off Sunday, took about two hours.
Then headed off north to "the S land" (5 quarters S1 through 5) for what turned out to be a 7 day marathon to cut 700 acres of lentils there
More rain shut harvesting down for half a day so we moved some grain around
Monday we started full out into the first half section, I was cutting by myself with the #2 combine for most of the day after my cousin bend the flex header on #1 when a plate broke lose.
The air reel makes this look mean!
We had both machines running full out on Wed, you can knock off a lot of acres 65' at a time @5mph
I blew a fan belt on #2 and after supper somehow ended up running #1 for the rest of the night, a couple of deer were watching in horror as we were destroying their buffet!
Thursday was a long day, #1 was parked for 4 hours with header issues then after supper my chopper belt when out on #2 (almost burnt the thing up for the second night in a row!) I did get a great sunset picture while waiting for parts.
We opened up S2 & 3 Friday
I was cutting a small 20acre patch across the raven and my cousin was cutting the headland before it got to dark, I actaully stopped the combine for 20seconds to take a picture!
A guy north of town still running old school
After 7 days on the same patch of dirt we moved off S3 to H1
which was apparently the last field to be rolled
H1 has more hills in the 80 acres of the west side than the rest of their land combined!
Cutting in tandem never seems to get old
We knocked off H1 in 7 hours then onto E1, our third field of the day!
1.5 miles from H1 and E1 is almost totally flat, there is one water run in the center of the field with a vertical drop of about 8' but otherwise it is the best 158 acres on the farm.
Sunday was not a good day
A gear stripped off the shaft in the header of #1 so they took it home leaving #2 to cut ~60 acres, two hours later the water pump and fan belt went out on me (again, tried burning it up for the third time in less than 8 days). So with #2 parked waiting to get fixed and the 35' header in front of the shop at home the pickup header was put on #1 and we got working on some lentil swaths to be used for seed.
60' swaths at 3.5-4 mph
I plugged the feeder house (the reverser wouldn't even back it out) at around 10 pm so we shut down for the night meaning Monday we woke up to a overheating combine up north, a header in front of the shop requiring major repairs to a main drive gear and #1 parked beside it plugged solid...
Air reels work great but they sure make a mess of the feeder house!
I had to come back to my day job so I am missing out on the durum and mustard still in the field, they are also seeding 3500acres of winter wheat so I may get some pictures of that next weekend.
