Here is the final drawing. I almost wrote back and asked him to change the rear hitch. If you want to pull something with current models you can't. That said it would be easy to change with a piece of styrene. Setting on a shelf it would look great as is. What say you? I intend to confirm tomorrow. Thanks Eric

How will it sit on the frame of the truck with the flat bottom? I like you have your company name on the bottom, but maybe take it off the sides. When It's on the shelf some guys might not like it. Just my opinion tho. How much detail do you think the door handles will have?
I'm still pondering the idea of getting you to make me a truck, but with the new bodies you are getting, I'm starting to think service truck. Very nice Eric

Very nice Eric For the trucks I build it will work great as I grind the frame smooth. Others may need to add shims or something to level it out. The Rockin H on the side will be faint. I did that so if/when it is copied I get a little credit for it. As for the door handles, I don't know. I will have one printed and make mods as necessary down the road. It will cost a little to make adjustments to the drawing so better make them all at once. Stay tuned, it this works as well as I hope I have a few ideas cued up for spring. Thanks for the feedback.

I really like it! The only thing is that the tool boxes look like they hang down too far and would drag. Other then that it looks great and I will be buying at least one. Jared

Jared They look low but will not drag. I hand made the one below and based the drawing in large part off of it. This bed was made from two resin beds bought from Moore Part Model Works and cut up for the cabinets and fenders. The rest is flat styrene. It came together well enough but it is just not as clean and neat as I would like. Thus the 3D experiment. Thanks for the questions, I appreciate them.

Rather than hide what I am doing I thought I'd give a you all the details on the 3D project.
1) I'm using shapeways.com as the vendor, I hired my artist at the same place. I found this website via the book Makers by Chris Anderson, a great read. Seriously, toy builders should read this book, especially if you have a notion to make it a business.
2) I submitted an order today for 2 beds. Using the least expensive material each bed is $20.81 each solid white in color. (there is a rainbow of color choices) For $118.00 I can get you one in stainless steel. There is NO discount if you buy 1 or 100. This is a blessing and a curse. Blessing as I can buy one perfect model and do not have to keep inventory. Curse, obviously, no quantity discount. Shrinks margins fast. And in my case, i pay to have the CAD work done.
3) To have the bed drawn cost $75 not bad IMO. Any changes now cost more $$
4) The beds will ship to me 12/18/12 which seems to be a pretty good turnaround
5) Fascinating factoid....An entry level desk top 3D printer is $2,000. Amazing it can be this cheap.

It looks good but for the project I would have in mind I would need the top tool boxes in a different location (movable) :-)

I love this process as the only limitations are imagination and a bit of money. The possibilities are endless.

I think they talked about 3d printers during the Idustrial engineering presentation during my engineering orientation course. I remember then talking about being able to design prototypes from your home, but I can't remember if that was it or not. I'll have look back and check.

The entry level 3D printers are, according to the books I've read, are made for prototyping but not the best for finished products. If you have time, read the book Makers by Chris Anderson, it is brilliant and great for anyone creating stuff. www.amazon.com/Makers-The-New-Industrial-Revolution/dp/0307720950/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354818217&sr=8-1&keywords=makers

Looking good I may recommend that if you end up unhappy with latch detail to look into tractor fab they make a assortment of 1:64 handles and latches, I use lots of their products and am more than pleased

My artist did ask about hinges and how much detail I wanted. Not knowing any better I should have said max detail but asked for the handles like you see on current resin and diecast beds. Thanks again.

It's probably way too late to chime in but the only change I would make would be to extend the back skirt lower to cover the back tool boxes, with a bumper formed in at the bottom which could double as a step. There could still be a pintle hitch on it, and it would close in the back and help hide any marks from mods which were done to the truck. Other than that it looks good the tool boxes matching the tanks looks alot more streamlined.

I visited with a guy that has seen the real bed and mentioned the real one is pretty crude compared to what you seen in the drawing. He laughed and said my hand made bed I don't really like would be closer to what the real bed looks like due to imperfections.
All I can say is my hand made bed is simply not good enough to be a Rockin H product. Hopefully the new bed exceeds my expectations LOL.
