I use 3/32" bass wood square dowels. I also use either 3/32 or 1/8 (which ever I can find--usually they only have 1/8) round bass wood dowels for square and round posts respectively. I use 1/32" thick bass wood sheets. I cut out strips using a knife and stainless steel ruler. I cut them 1/16, 3/32, etc. wide depending on the lumber to be represented i.e. 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, etc. I use loctite super glue gel for my glue. For foam board, use either 1/8" or 3/16" thick elmers foam board depending on what thickness you can find. Wood would make a more detailed building, but foam can make a pretty decent looking building for cheap cost and less time.
