While I was at the farm today cutting with the bushhog, I saw this fellow going by to bed some tobacco land. It's an 8400 with an 8 row KMC ripper bedder on the back. This one has a liquid tank on it. A lot of them have fumigant tanks instead, and riding around today, there were a lot of "Do Not Enter" caution signs by the fields due to the use of the fumigant. This machine is set on 46" row spacings. Why 46"? Because that is the width the most popular harvester comes in! (Powell) From the rear

All the tobacco land here is bedded and some guys use the same bedders, transplanters, and cultivators to produce sweet potatoes. Tobacco planting wraps up in mid to late May and then they start in on the sweet potatoes in early June. That way, you are able to use the 46" spaced equipment on two crops instead of one. Labor also carries over because tobacco is just about finished when sw potatoes are dug. I think Powell equipment is most popular because they're built in Bennettsville SC which is our neighboring state to the south. Importing equipment from SC is cheaper than importing it from Italy or Canada. There is some DeCloet equipment run here, but it's probably 2 to 1 in favor of Powell.
Mechanical brand transplanters and KMC cultivators with dry fertilizer boxes are the most popular brands for planting and cultivating. The JD 6000 Hi Cycle is still the most popular for spraying tobacco.

No Granville in your area? I see a few Powell but not a lot of Decloet. I swear every bulk barn is made by Roanoke though. Nice looking rig that guy has too, hopefully I can catch my neighbors bedding their tobacco ground if were not to busy with spring tillage ourselves. I don't see many frame mounted tanks either, most guys got bit by the saddle tank bug.

Granville boxes, trailers and bailers are popular here. The conveyor trailers are really cool.

Lilliston bedders and cultivators are still popular around here but KMC is replacing everything that is being replaced. My neighbor has a wing-fold 8 row bedder but most people around here are on 48 inch rows. We finished bedding two weeks ago and will probably start setting in two weeks or so.
