Spraying Season

Crops are up and looking good so far, with the exception of the Canola being a bit patchy from not enough moisture early on. We were out full force for the last 3 days getting the legumes sprayed (herbicide). Finished up this morning on the last of the peas. Herbicide application on the cereals, shouldn't be starting until into next week. They can handle being a little more advanced than the legumes can.

Nice sprayer. Do the wider tires cause much extra crop damage?

At this crop stage, no. In cereal crops the only wheel tracks that will show are if we spray for wheat midge at the filling stage. The lentils bounce back remarkably well during desication at harvest too so the last couple years we've been leaving the bigger tires on for that as well though we do have the skinnies here for it if we feel the need to change them over.

Their only a 20.8x38 so they don't leave that much of a track anyways, not like running a 650 metrics, or duals like some guys do...

A few more pictures from spraying the cereal crops. We've had a pretty narrow spraying window this year. Wind, rain, and muddy fields have providing a challenge for us though we did manage one nice day where we were able to cover 1200 acres of ground in a 12 hr span. These pics all come from my spring wheat crop located on my parents "home qtr". Looking really good at this point but was also quite thick with volunteer Round Up ready Canola. Forecast looked bleak and a rain shower had already passed by an hour before we got there. Ground was muddy from a couple inches of rain earlier in the week too but, it needed to be done, so wheel tracks or not, we got too it and finished up just as a 30-40mph east wind got up.


Dad's John Deere R was sitting at the yards edge. He keeps the 10' McCormick #50 cultivator hitched up for working gardens.



Had a "moment" with my old high school ride while I was at the farm...... Getting pretty rough...

Not sure about admitting you drove an El Cam was a good idea! LOL, Dad wanted to get one of those for me when I was sixteen 20 years ago, but I talked him into an old Jeep Cherokee instead.
