Very busy time to say the least at Double S Farms. Started planting end of last week. Right now the conditions for planting are perfect as we got some rain the begining of last week and past couple days have been low to mid 70's. All the machinery is running flawless which is good because i dont think we have the time for a break down right now.
Here is a picture of the home place when we were getting everything ready, as you can see we have our fair share of tillage to stay ahead of the 16 row planter.
To start off the back to back corn ground, we run the disks over it. Here are the two disks running hard.
Once done disking, we bring in the field cultivator and packer to make a nice smooth planting bed.
In the background we are fueling up the disking tractors before heading to the next field.
Before the field cultivator is done the 8320 and the planter is already at the field rolling, its a good thing we have the extra power of the 9530 to pull the field cultivator fast enough to keep a good lead on the planter.
Some fields had cattle grazing corn stalks for a good while during the winter so they tend to be a bit more compacted, one the tougher pulling fields we like to use the disk rippers which is what we are doing on this field while the disks are parked. As before, the field cultivator makes a good smooth planting bed afterwards.
Our newest tillage practice is strip tilling, we are mainly only strip tilling some wheat stubble and a couple pivots of bean ground, but we are also doing a lot of custom strip tilling for neighbors. This rig is never stopped during the day right now, even with 9000 hours, there is no tractor that could be as reliable as the 4850
Right now we have 5 guys running the tractors non-stop, 1 in the planter, 1 in the strip tiller, 1 in the field cultivator, and 2 in the disks, at this rate we should be done soon, which we will definetly need to be because there is alot of wheat that needs sprayed and cattle set out to pasture.
Comments and questions welcome.
