Sure is a odd year compared to the past few. Cool and damp could be a good description for this summer. Humid rarely describes Saskatchewan ever! Yet this year... that might also pass for the way it's been to this point too. Crops are looking great! Though it's kinda getting a bit late to be at the stage they're at, as most crops were seeded as much as 2 weeks later than average. Frost may be the next factor to contend with. All the moisture has been great for flowering and filling, but we need heat to get things drying, especially the lentils and peas. More often than not we're ready to get combining legumes by first week of August. This year looking at the fields we're still at least 2 (if not 3) weeks away. The cereals will most likely not be ready to go before labor day at this point.
Here's what it's looking like around here these days...
...Combines out and header on, ready to go.
Shop's been busy over the past couple weeks.
The swather header got some major attention that I didn't plan on when I dug it out earlier. Then on top of that, when I pulled the swather tractor out of the quonset a trail of oil followed me out the door and quickly puddled underneath once I stopped. On inspection oil was pouring out of a breather on the bellhousing (for a gearbox that drives all the hydraulic pumps). Wound up pulling the hydro drive motor and changing the seal that keeps the hydraulic fluid out of the gearbox/bellhousing.
In town for parts, my attention was grabbed by a certain 2388 sitting on the lot. What caught my attention was the stenciled farm name on the side. My father-in-law's farm name to be exact. We only ran this combine (03 model) for one year in 2007. It has been the only combine we've had that had our farm name on the side and it's kinda funny that the lettering remains after all this time. As an interesting side note... The neighbor who bought this combine, traded it in this spring on our 8010 that we replaced this 2388 with.
a little flashback to 2007
Like I said earlier, the crops around here look great. We mowed our isolation strips around the registered seed fields this past week and ready for crop inspections to take place when ever.
My abnormally big peas are still big... They've for the most part finished flowering and started drying but have a long way to go yet.
I'm 5'11"... and I'm standing next to the peas taking this picture... NOT kneeling beside them. Never seen anything like them before.
As a comparison this was Aug 2/3/4 last year...
